Coqueta

Pin It Now!
Any place that touts itself as a tapas or even Basque cuisine makes me a little hesitant since I've never found any place that comes close to what I had in San Sebastian.  Michael Chiarello took a stab at it with Coqueta.  The restaurant is small and quaint with a bright, homey feel.  It was fun to look around the restaurant and see small ingredients used as decorations that reminded me of Spain.  While the cuisine still doesn't come close to the fabulous food I had in San Sebastian (see post HERE), its the closer than anything I've in SF so far.

Yay!  Estrella Damn!  A taste of a Barcelona beer was just the start of the Basque meal that took me back to memories of my Spain trip.

One thing I love about the pintxos in Spain was the plentiful seafood dishes.  The calamari were chewy and plated with squid ink aioli and onion aioli.

The wood grilled octopus was one of my favorite dishes of the night.  The octopus was tender, but chewy with a nice smokey, grilled taste.  A little firm, but a little soft, you can never go wrong with fingerling potatoes.

At $2.50 a skewer, its a fun way to snack before the rest of the meal comes.  Today's skewers choices were (right to left): quail egg "Diablo", pickled mustard seed and jamon serrano; house cured boquerones, white anchovies, olives, pearl onions, guindilla peppers; chorizo, roasted artichokes, and piquillo peppers; jamon serrano, manchego, and apricot-sherry conserva; baby beets, caña de cabra cheese, citrus, and spring onion a la plancha.

Trying to save room for the rest of the meal, I only chose 3 skewers (left to right): manchego cheese, quail egg, and chorizo.

Sunny side egg served with shrimp, crispy potato strings, and chorizo dressing.  The "gravy"made of bits of chorizo reminds me of my favorite XO sauce, but it made this dish a little too oily.  The shredded potato strings reminded me of this dish I had in San Sebastian, Spain (see post HERE)

I decided bypass the most obvious rice dish (paella) and choose the arroz cremosa.  Snaps for using the correct rice (bomba rice) for this dish as well as the paella.  The scallops were so lush and tender.  The English peas and sprouts gave this dish a nice fresh taste.

The pluma seems to be the most popular dish, making its appearance on almost every table in the restaurant.  At $38, this was surprisingly the most expensive dish of the night.  The Iberico de bellota pork shoulder loin was lightly covered with honey chili glaze.  While the meat was cooked to juicy perfection, I was hoping for some charred or grilled taste to the meat.  I found the glaze to be too sweet for the meat and would rather have it with just a dash of salt granules.

A bottle of chili glaze is given, in case you prefer your meat even sweeter!

Even if you are stuffed, Coqueta offers dessert bites as well as regular sized desserts.  Manchego cheesecake served on sticks with caramel popcorn.  A nice density with very cheese taste and texture.

Another dessert bite was the sangria "pop-rocksickles".  An adult popsickle with a sprinkle of poprocks for childhood nostalgia.  Cute, fun idea, but hard to eat.

Churros con chocolate is a nice way to end the meal.  Having had my fill of churros con churros travelling through Spain, I was excited to see this on the menu.  The drinkable chocolate was mixed with cinnamon and used for dipping the fried dough.  Although the churros had a nice crust, the insides were mushy.  The chocolate sauce was much thinner than the ones that I had in Spain.  It didn't coat the churros nicely.  Pretty disappointing.

Iberia

Pin It Now!
Iberia is the most authentic Spanish restaurant I had outside of Spain.  I love how the tapas are reminiscent of the dishes I ate in Spain.

Iberia gives you sliced bread upon seating,  but make sure you have them give you the cheese bread.  These bite sized biscuits are warm and fluffy with hints of cheese in each bite.

Papas bravas is a common item on all tapas menus.  The potatoes here are a little softer than I like.  Also, the spicy aioli was a little too creamy.
Usually, I'm not a fan of bacon or dates, but these grilled bacon wrapped dates was a combination made in heaven.  The grilling made the dates ooze a sweet syrup that complimented the salty bacon.
croquettes con jamon.  Deep fried mashed potatoes with savory bits of ham.
Gambas a la plancha.  These shrimps were grilled with garlic and parsley.
The paella here takes at least 20 minutes so order as soon as you get seated!  Also, you must have a minimum of two orders to order paella (the picture is two orders).  I love the paella here.  The seafood paella was filled with shrimp, mussels, assorted seafood, and chunks of chicken.  The saffron infused rice soaks up the flavors of the seafood well.  The rice is perfectly cooked, not mushy or dry.

Txoko

Pin It Now!
After having some delicious foie from Naked Lunch (see post HERE), I decided to book the foie tasting for their restaurant, Txoko.  Only 5 more days to savor the last bites of foie, so I've been scrambling to get my last bites of foie in.  For the last Tues and Thurs of the month, Txoko has a $65/pp 4 course foie gras tasting menu.
Even for weekday dinners, Txoko was fully booked.  Although, majority of the tables seemed to be indulging in the foie tasting meal.

The first course of the foie tasting meal was the "salt cured foie gras torchon".  From left to right: salt cured foie gras torchon, dates, toasted almonds, and duck confit salad.  The foie gras was placed on a small toasted bread that was salty and savory.  Each bite melted in your mouth and made me wish for another.  One thing I've noticed at Txoko/Naked Lunch is their foie gras is savory and delicious, but too rich.  Most foie gras I've had, it becomes too rich for me after a couple bites, but at Txoko/Naked Lunch the foie taste in my mouth makes me yearn for more.  The syrupy sweetness from the dates complimented the sweet notes of the foie gras. Besides the foie torchon, the duck confit salad was the other standout of this dish.  Salty bits of the duck confit made my mouth salvitate for more.  That is a seriously good salad.
Close up of the foie gras torchon.
"Foie gras a la plancha".  A seared piece of foie gras resting on top a toasted bread with slices of piquillo pepppers for sweetness and shredded crispy potatoes for crunch.  I felt a little jipped to know that two courses in a row were similar in style - foie on a toasted bread.  This dish was a little sweeter than the first dish (more savory) due to the piquillo peppers and the corn syrup.  This dish was good, but it was my least favorite dish of the meal.
"Pan Roasted Muscovy Hen Breast".  The hen had a slightly crispy crust with super tender, juicy meat inside.  Well cooked, but I was hoping for some in-your-face foie taste.  I loved the lentil and wild mushroom underneath the hen.  The only foie thing on this dish was the foie sauce, but it didn't have a strong foie flavor.  If I hadn't know it was a foie dressing, I would never guessed it had foie in it.  A good dish, but not a good foie dish.

The foie gras ice cream was possibly the most interesting and anticipated dish on the menu for me.  It was topped with flecks of sea salt and fresh apricot compote and whole wheat sable cookie crumbles.  I was only able to taste a small savory component in the first couple bites of the ice cream.  Not really a foie taste, but more of a rich, fatty taste and after taste in those few bites.  Each of the parts of this dish were tasty - the apricot was fresh and flavorful, but not exciting if you were expecting foie.

Quimet i Quimet - Spain ( Barcelona)

Pin It Now!
Quimet i Quimet was a pretty good walk from the busier area of Barcelona, but well worth it.  Quimet i Quimet is the most quaint little eatery.  Walking into the street, you almost question if you might have mistakely taken the wrong turn somewhere.  Quimet i Quimet is so different from the extravagant and intricate foods I experienced in Barcelona.  There is a small Spanish menu in posted in the doorway.
